“Dead To Sin But Alive To God In Christ Jesus!”(Rom.6:9-11).
Let me approximate our text with the words of Ruth to Naomi, her mother-in-law, “…Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death seperates you and me”(Ruth 1:16-17).
In Ruth we see love, devotedness and commitment to the man she married. Our people say you do not sell a goat and still hold tight to the rope by which it is tethered. Ruth was ready to sacrifice her youthfulness in memory of her late husband. She would have remained with her family and remarry, but she chose to go, live and die with her mother-in-law. And by this she became an ancestress to the great king David.
There is a reward for standing for what you are committed to till the end. Jesus says, those who hold the plough and keep looking back are not fit for the kingdom of God. Nothing can seperate us from the love of God. Not even death! Death rather seals our union with Christ.
When Christ died, “he died to sin once and for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. In the same way we should count ourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
Like Ruth through our baptism we leave all our past, notwithstanding how promising that past was and cling to Christ who is our determined future.
We are dead to the past of sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Ruth did not know what her future life with Naomi will be like, but she knew for sure that where Naomi went is where she will go and die where Naomi will die. But for us we know what our future life will be. We are going to be with Christ to reign eternally.
While we are still here let us live lives which are worthy of those who identify in the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ thank you for opening for me the way to eternal bliss. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
