“Confess That ‘Jesus Is Lord’ And You Will Be Saved!”(Rom.10:9-17).
Christianity like Judaism, the religion of its origin are today referred to as “religions of the Book.” But these religions did not begin in a book. Everything began in orality. Genesis means “beginnings” but its content were written after it had circulated orally for centuries.
In the same way the stories about Jesus were written down after they had circulated orally for decades.“faith comes by hearing the message…”
In our time we would have considered that more and more people would deepen their faith through reading than by hearing the word. Sadly though, the sin of laziness to read, especially the word of God is having a firm grip on this generation.
One is often embarrassed to hear undergraduates voicing it out that they hate reading.
In the midst of script, orality should still be of importance. I recall that when two friends heard of the invention of the printing press, one said, “Thank God, everything will now be remembered.” The friend said, “No, everything will be forgotten, because people will put everything down in print and then forget them in their memory.”
Hearing is central to our beliefs. You are going to be saved if you “confess with your mouth that ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead.”
The above was the early Christian statement of faith. The masses who were converted did not read about Jesus from a book; the stories about Jesus were told to them and they believed.
The prophet Joel had prophesied, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved”(Jl.2:32). The question was – and still is – How can people call on the name of the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can someone preach to them unless they are sent?…Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.”
My friend, Bible societies are doing everything possible to make come true the dream of each person a Bible but like the Ethiopian eunuch what we read may not make sense unless someone explains it to us(Acts 8:30-31).
We need those who have been called to preach the message to us. Therefore, “today, if you hear his voice…” “confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead. Also keep in mind that “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit help me to submit to the messengers so that I may confess that “Jesus is Lord.” Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
