“Complement Your Sunday Rest With Just And Righteous Actions!”
Mrs Dze is a poor widow whose husband left her with very little to take care of their two young children. Her late husband’s junior brother who happens to be wealthy insists on grabbing the little inheritance from her if she refuses to marry him. She took the case to court where it dragged on for years because the defendant knew how to play his game.
The verdict finally ruled in favour of Mrs Ndze; only because the magistrate who was handling the case was transferred.
Ironically both the plaintiff, defender and the corrupt magistrate were very regular dieharRest With d Christians of the same congregation.
Every Sunday the accused and the magistrate were in church with “choice fellowship offerings.” The defendant is a choir master, singing heaven down to earth in praise and adoration! This story is a microcosm of the sad reality of the relationship between our piety and the practice of justice and righteousness,
The Lord is definite in his verdict: “I hate, I despise your religious feasts…Even though you bring me burnt offerings, I will not accept them, though you bring choice fellowship offerings, I will have no regard for them.” God ignores even the sweet angelic songs when there is no justice and righteousness in the land.
Our Sunday piety means nothing before God; unless we “Let justice roll on like a river, and righteousness like a never-failing stream”(Am.5:21-24).
In Maroua I noticed stream beds that are dry much of the year. When there is no justice and righteousness in human society, life would be like plants around such waterless river beds. But where justice and righteousness flow like never-failing stream, human life flourishes in the same way that plants and animals flourishes around never-failing streams.
The psalmist assures that, “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or stand in the way of sinners…but his delight is in the law of the Lord… He is like tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not whither…For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous…”(Ps.1).
My friend, it is good that we respect Sunday and worship the Lord on this day. But best practice which is acceptable to the Lord is that after Sunday we should ensure that we engage in just and righteous actions from Monday to Saturday.
Prayer: Lord forgive me. Holy Spirit help me to always complemet my piety with justice and righteousness. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
Babila Fochang.
