“Commemorating Jesus In The Lord’s Supper!
We are told that tortoise knew that his sick father would soon die. He tried to run away from the funeral responsibility. He informed the elders that he was going on a journey. He said nobody should send for him unless something happened which had never happened before. Not long after, his father died. The elders knowing tortoise’s cunning reflected that if they sent word to him that his father was dead, he will ask them whether death was something that had never happened before. So they sent word to him that the palm tree in his father’s compound had produced a cone at the tail end of a palm branch. Tortoise hurried home to come see this miracle that had never happened before. When he arrived home he realised that there is nothing new under the sun.
We merely take what is there and fill it with new content. Today we commemorate the institution of the Lord’s Supper by Jesus. Jesus did not bring anything new except himself. What he met, he filled with new content; giving them new meaning. He made old things to become new.
It was in the course of celebrating the regular Passover meal that Jesus filled it with new content. He gave it a new meaning. The Passover celebrated how the angel of death passed over the houses of the Hebrews while killing the firstborn of the Egyptians. But on this day “while they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave to his disciples, saying, ‘Take it, this is my body.’ Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, and they all drank. ‘This is the blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many…'”
While they were having this meal he said to them, “I tell you the truth, one of you will betray me – one who is eating with me…It is one of the Twelve, one who dips bread into the bowl with me…” (Mk.14:12-26).
This is the kind of person Jesus /is! A man who could maintain his patience and hold his peace as he shared food and drink with the person who was about to cause his death! What a lesson to us his disciples!
The Lord’s Supper reminds us of Jesus’ body and blood which has replaced the sin offering that was sacrifced yearly. His blood has made us new creations so that our dirty past should not betray him anew. We should sing hymns as we accompany him to the Mount of Olives.
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me to be tolerant of, and patient with everybody; including those who betray me. Amen!
Have a blessed Holy Thursday! Peace be with you!
