“Come And Quench Your Thirst!”( Jn.15:37-39).
“On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood up and said in a loud voice, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me as the Scriptures has said, streams of living water will flow within him.’…
Jesus continues to fill the old with new content as he attended the Feast of Taberncles like any other Jew. He however breached protocol because teachers usually sat to speak. In his case he drew attention to himself by standing.
The Feast of Taberncles was a great feast in the Jewish year which celebrated the completion of harvest and commemorating God’s goodness to the people during the desert wanderings(cf.Lev.23:33-43).
According to John, Jesus’ words above was a figurative expression meaning “the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive…”
Like we said yesterday, the lessons for this week prepares us for the celebration (next Sunday) of the Spirit descending on the disciples on Pentecost.
The Spirit is given to those who believe in Jesus Christ as the Son of God who died, was buried, was raised to life and has ascended into heaven where he sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
Sitting at the Father’s right hand is yet another figurative expression from a purely anthropomorphic point of view. If God is everywhere, there is surely no space at his right or left. His right hand is therefore in alignment to the expression, “right hand man!”
What is important is that the exalted Lord Jesus Christ is back with the Father and has sent the Spirit who is the third person of the Trinity to lead us into all truth and is a living stream flowing within any believer, and whoever drinks of him thirsts no more.
This means that Pentecost or no Pentecost, if you have received the Spirit, it is flowing within you. But when you turn away from the LORD, the Spirit abandons you.
When we have received the Spirit and still get caught up in sin, we should like David pray: “…Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me away from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from me…”(Ps.51). Amen!
Welcome back to a new working day and week! Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
