“”Believe That Jesus Is The Christ And Have Life In His Name!”(Jn.20:30-31).
Our meditations this week evolved around miraculous signs; particularly the miraculous signs performed by Jesus Christ. Contemporary miracles that we have witnessed through tele-evagelism, including the raising of the dead are like the tricks of magicians.
While we do not discredit miraculous signs performed in the name of Jesus, we are however concerned about the raison d’etre of some such. Miracles that are intended to pull crowds to the miracle worker cannot be to the glory of God.
Jesus Christ must be the focal point for any miraculous signs.
In our fanaticism we often exhibit lits of ignorance when we ask, “Where is it written in the Bible?” John lets us to know that there is much about Jesus which is not found in the Bible when he states,“Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book.” Furthermore, the concluding verse to his gospel states,“Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written”(Jn.21:25).
John may have been hyperbolic here, but the main point is that “our historical knowledge of Jesus is at best partial, but we have been given all we need to know.”
In as much as we have the latitude to seek further to know that which is not contained in the Scriptures about Jesus, still it is not necessary. If we cannot believe what is written in the Scriptures, we would still not believe any unscriptural script.
The miraculous signs of Jesus are intended for us believers to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing we may have life in his name. Miracles happen to each one of us daily by the mere fact of our being alive. We should learn to appreciate that each day of our lives God reveals his presence so that we should adore him and with awe appear before him to give him glory.
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus, I believe what is written about you. You are the Christ, the Son of God. In your name I have life. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
