“Be Comforted; Your Day Of Restoration Is Here!”
The Akan of Ghana allowed the choice of a new natural ruler in the hands of old women. It was considered that these old mothers knew the character traits of each child. Reason being that each time parents were going to the farm they placed the children under the care of the old mothers.
Among the Chambas of Nigeria and Cameroon a common way fathers used in selecting their successors was to ask one of the sons during meals to share the meat. Note was taken of those sons who after sharing took the first portion. Such is an exhibition of greed and selfishness. A good sharer takes the last portion after all others have made their choices. The child who takes first was written off. He won’t care about what happens to his siblings as long as he had his share.
A greedy and selfish person is a scatterer and not a gatherer! Such are the rams who feed on the good pasture and then trample the rest of the pasture under their feet. They drink clear water, then muddy the rest of the water with their feet. The rest of the people are left to eat what the others have trampled and drink what they have muddied. What a world!
This reminds me of this story: A teacher asked the pupils to each draw a good shepherd. One child drew the picture of a healthy boy sitting on a lean sheep.
The hurt of God is this people of power and influence who oppress the poor! God expects social justice and equity from the leaders. And since the selected shepherds have fallen short of their responsibilities God himself will gather his flock and tend them properly (Ez.34:11-19); just as he has done through Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd!
It is not as if God is advocating for another theocracy, like it was before Saul was anointed king. Rather, this is a clarion call that leaders both secular and sacred should lead rather than rule! And they should lead with the fear of God! “All lives matter!”
Prayer: Lord I know I am not a perfect leader; Holy Spirit inspire me to lead others with the fear of God. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
