“A Priest Like No Other!”(Heb.7:1-14).
“If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the people), why was there still need for another priesthood to come – one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must also be a change of the law…”
Melchizedek is a prototype of Christ the King. Nothing is known about Melchizedek. From nowhere we read that after Abraham returned from rescuing Lot, “Melchizedek the king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, ‘Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.’ Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything”(Gen.14:18-20).
The writer of Hebrews talks of Christ as High Priest in the order of Melchizedek, not to n the order of Aaron. Melchizedek was priest of God Most High when God had not yet initiated priesthood through the bloodline of Aaron.
Melchizedek reigned when city states were nations and there was no dichotomy between religion and politics; just like in Africa of old. The king’s functioned as king’s and priests.
Melchizedek means “my king is rughteous” or “king of Righteousness.” He ruled in Salem, a shortened form of Jerusalem and related to the Hebrew word for peace.
The Lord Jesus Christ is a King of Righteousness and the Prince of Peace. His kingdom is one in which righteousness and peace are personified.
A new priest who predates the Aaronic priesthood abrogated whatever the Aaronic priesthood stood for. And this means a change of the old law in which the Aaronic priesthood operated.
In Christ old things are gone and those who are in him have become “new creations.”
Those who stand in the presence of an ordinary priest expect to leave his altar presence renewed and envigorated with hopes of brighter and better days ahead. How much more is it for those who are administered by Christ the Priest of the Most High God!
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ may we remain in your presence, invigorated and with never-ending fresh anointing. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
