“Believe The Lord Jesus Christ Without Sign!(Lk.11:29-32).
When Jesus drove out a demon from a mute man, some people tested him by asking for a sign from heaven(Lk.11:14&16). Jesus exorcised a dumb and the dumb spoke. We are right to conclude that this was already a sign, but the people were myopic not to recognise it. Or maybe they recognised it, that is why the demand for a sign was a test.
A sign from heaven was the one thing that could validate Jesus’ authority as a teacher(rabbi) and miracle worker.
All things being equal, Jesus did not have the credentials that qualified him for being a religious teacher in the Israel of his time. During Jesus’ time a rabbi’s credentials was evaluated according to how he was knowledgeable in the Torah, how he adhered to traditional interpretation, and in a more critical way whether he trained under a recognised master. Just like the people of Jesus’ time , we appreciate that Jesus mastered the scriptures well, but we do not read from any source that he was apprenticed under any known rabbi. This explains why the religious authorities in Jerusalem did not recognise him as an authorised rabbi. To make it worse, Jesus intentionally went against the second criteria for establishing a rabbi’s credentials: He did not adhere to the traditional interpretation of scriptures. Traditional interpretation had moved away from the core values of living faith, reducing faith to ritual observations void of spiritual depth!
The failure to recognise the active visible miraculous is more so today than then. An emphasis on academic excellence – even in seminaries – ignores the spiritual. The outcome is cerebral faith and spiritual dryness! The evidence is the geometric growth of evil in the midst of numerous churches and denominations.
Jesus spits it out like a venom: “This is a wicked generation.” A wicked generation wants signs and wonders. They are running up and down, crisscrossing the continent in search of the miraculous as if getting up each morning is not miracle enough!
The Lord Jesus Christ says, “Search as you can. I am not giving any sign except the sign of Jonah.”
Jonah was in the belly of the fish for three days before he was vomited out to go to Nineveh. In the same way, the Lord Jesus Christ was in the belly of the earth for three days before the resurrection.
Jonah was a sign to Nineveh in the same way that the risen Christ is to us. The good thing with the Ninevites was that they listened to Jonah, and they repented. The queen of Sheba travelled a long distance to come listen to the wise king Solomon, but the Christ is more than Solomon in wisdom. Christ is the wisdom from God! Christ is our wisdom!
Dear friend, no miracle can convince a hardened heart! The teaching and wisdom from Christ is enough to bring us to repentance.
If the word of God does not transform us, then no sign and wonder will do it.
