“Called To Deconstruct And Reconstruct!”(Jer.1:4-10)
One lame hope-killing excuse is “I am too young for this.” This excuse challenges the wisdom of God’s choice. Just like he told Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, before you were born, I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
Other excuses that hold us back are fear and not being fluent. There are many reasons that cause fear; including fear of threats, rejection, being killed, among others. God does not call us because of our ability of oratory. Oratory is learned on the job. Whether we are stammerers like Moses, or not knowing what to say, or just being shy to speak, he who calls knows how to fix us.
Like with Jeremiah of old, the LORD reassures: “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you and to say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you.”
There is no reason to be afraid. He who calls and assigns also equips and protects. Prophets are the mouthpiece of the LORD. Without divine empowerment, they can not convey divine messages to the secular world. Like with Jeremiah, the LORD touches our mouths and puts his words in our mouths.
Jeremiah was appointed “over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.”
Jeremiah’s assignment lays the foundation for “the theology of reconstruction.”
Reconstruction is “the action or process of reconstructing or being reconstructed.” Reconstruction “inherently presupposes both construction and deconstruction, acting as the synthesis of a three-part process (construction, deconstruction, reconstruction) to create something new from what existed before…”
There is a sense in which conversion is a reconstruction. In Christ, we are reconstructed to become new creations so as to regain our original state in paradise(garden of Eden) after we have been constructed by sin.
A prophet like Jeremiah, who was sent to the nations and kingdoms, operates in specific kingdoms one after each until he has fulfilled his mission.
The nations and kingdoms of the world operate within the domination system. The domination system thrives on legalised structures of sin. These structures of sin encourage the spirit of “Empire;” which are structures set up to benefit a few with the sweat and blood of the majority.
The modus operandi is suppression of majority rights, oppression, marginalisation, injustices, brute force, promoting the philosophy of “might is right.
In a nutshell, the domination system is a strict application of the rule of the pigs in Orwell’s “Animal Farm.”
My friend, these are the structures that the prophet is called to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow” so as “to build and plant” the rule of God where justice, equality, truth, righteousness, compassion and the fear of the LORD through Christ becomes the new unshakeable structure.
Reconstruction has a three-tier advancement: individual, ecclesiastical, and then the nations.
At the individual level, we have to be introspective so as to uproot what has been built wrongly in us so that we can rebuild in Christ.
The church as the earthly body of Christ has to deconstruct the domination system it has copied from the nations – that is removing the log in her eyes so as to see clearly to remove the speck in society’s eye.
Only then can social reconstruction become genuine.
God is calling us to this assignment. Don’t be afraid! He is with us to rescue us when need be.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to uproot what has been wrongly built in me, and make me a new creation. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
