“Seek God’s Kingdom!”(Lk.12:22-31).
The days pledge: “Thy will O LORD not mine, I will obey…”
A man said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus told the man that had not been appointed to be an arbiter between them. Jesus now proceeded to teach them to guard against all kinds of greed and that “a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
To buttress his point, he told the parable of a rich man who, after a fruitful harvest, increased his barns, saying to himself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry.”
The man was a fool for not knowing that God will demand his life that very day.
Jesus concluded by saying the same fate awaits “anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich towards God”(Lk.12:13-21).
Against this backdrop follows the teaching on “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.”
As it is, we cannot add a single hour to life by worrying. Worry usually shortens life rather than adding. It is people of little faith who worry about tomorrow. Live one day at a time without worrying, and tomorrow takes care of itself. Worry is a distraction that steals concentration!
The question is, Can we actually live one day at a time without any plan for tomorrow? Basic human needs are food, clothing, and shelter. But we have to work to get these things. And none of the basic needs can be acquired in one day.
Therefore, using the example of birds and lilies is figurative. We must plan for the future, but let that future not be our main preoccupation! We should not set our hearts on them! The core message intended here is, “Do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it… Your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.”
Dear friend, the Lord Jesus Christ is telling us that seeking God is a top priority in life. Seeking him is not by daily church attendance or regular payment of church financial dues or continuous fastings and vigils. Seeking God’s kingdom is the daily intentional yearning to do the will of God in submissive obedience to his will and commands
Prayer: Holy Spirit inspires us to fix our eyes on things above. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
