“In The Time Of Plenty, Remember The Lord Who Provided!”(Dt.8:10-18).
In “Things Fall Apart” the master story-teller Chinua Achebe compares Okonkwo to the nza bird who after a heavy meal forgot itself and challenged his personal chi to a wrestling match. In the midst of abundance it is easy to forget the provider. When we wallow in abundance we may become proud and haughty. We may tend to boast of the sacrifices we made for our achievements.
As the children of Israel were about to enter the promised land, Moses warned them: “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you today. Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, and when your…silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, then your heart will become proud and you will forget the Lord your God, who” liberated you from bondage.
The Lord encourages hard work. There is no food for a lazy man. The sluggard is even asked to learn lessons of hardwork from the ants(Prv.6:6ff). The person who does not work should not eat!(II Thes.3:10).“But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.”
In summary: “Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God,” when you are swimming in abundance. Work hard, “But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth…” “When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the Lord your God for the good land he has given you.”
Dear friend, if you were almost forgetting the Lord your God, then make a u-turn back to him. God loves those who make u-turns back to him!
Prayer of the week: Holy Spirit guide me so that my achievements and acquisitions should not cause me to forget the Lord who provides. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working week! Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
