“Be A Servant To Others!”
Grassfield Folk wisdom concludes that the dog is hot on a chase for its own sake; it is not for the master’s sake. Humanbeings are inclined towards self-interest and/or self-centredness. The tendency is always to ssk, “What would be my gain or benefit…?”
James and John, the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we want…Let one of us sit at your right hand and the other at your left in your glory… When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.”
The ten were indignant with the two brothers because they too were probably nursing the same secret ambitions. All along they were imagining themselves being top officials in the kingdom where Jesus will be king. The request of James and John revealed their ambition for position and power in the manner of worldly politics.
Positions of power and prestige in kingdom matters comes through servanthood. Whoever wants to lead should willingly submit to servanthood.
We cannot be disciples of Jesus Christ by claiming mastership instead of servanthood. Jesus radically overturns the value structure of the world. Discipleship must be characterized by humble and loving service. Jesus himself “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”(Mk.10:35-45).
Jesus does not oppose us being leaders. He is opposed to the value structure of the world! In the vineyard of the Lord to become great is to be a servant to others. Whoever wants to be first must be the slave of all.
Jesus is himself the perfect example of sacrificial service. Son of God that he is, he came to serve and not to be served; just so that he should save us from the sin that had kidnapped and kept us in bondage.
One way or the other we are all in positions of power and prestige. How do we treat others? Do we serve them or they serve us? Discipleship is humble sacrificial service. Be a servant to others.
Prayer: Holy Spirit lead me on the path of servanthood leadership. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
