“When Truth Means Nothing!”
In the English law system a suspect is conssidered innocent until proven guilty. It was even more so with the Jewish Sanhedrin. Before a death sentence was passed on somebody it needed two witnesses whose testimonies had to be the same to actually prove a person worthy of death.
In the case of Jesus there was surely a travesty of justice! Upon his arrest he was brought before the Sanhedrin for a religious trial (Mtt.26:57-75).
He was taken “to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled…” The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.”
When the coup plotters have made up their mind to eliminate you then truth has no meaning!
They finally got two persons who based their testimony by a distortion of the truth or call it a testimony based on half truth. They said they heard Jesus saying, “I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.”
True he said something like that. When the Jews demanded a miraculous sign from him to prove his authority Jesus had said, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days. But the temple he had spoken of was his body…”(Jn.2:18-22).
This were the words of Jesus distorted by the two witnesses and taken as exhibit A1!
They say “speech is silver, but silence is golden,” possibly the reason why Jesus chose to remain silent. The high priest forced him to break his silence when he made a direct request charging Jesus under oath by the living God, “Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” Jesus replied, “Yes, it is as you say….” The high priest considered this a blasphemy that was enough to sentence him to death. From here his real passion started.
Whatever happened to Jesus he knew he must obey his Father and die for you and I. This he did for you and I, what have we done for him?
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, you were lied against, comdemned, spat upon, struck and slapped for our sake. You bore it with patience out of obedience to your Father. May your pain be our healing. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
