“Make Your Service To God A Regular Custom!”
The biblical Job stands as a representation of the very rich whose wealth does not reduce their love and service to God. Rather they see God as the one who has blessed them and so their absolute trust in him is quadrupled. Our text today is a prologue to the book of Job (1:1-5). It tells us that Job “was blameless and upright, he feared God and shunned evil…He was the greatest man among all the people of the East…” When his children organised a feast he made sure that “when the period of feasting had run its course, he would send and have them purified…” He took this as a regular custom because he thought that during the feasting his children may have sinned and cursed God.
To us this prologue is a “dramatic irony” which has been defined as “when an audience watching a play understands what’s going on in a situation while the characters are unaware of what is happening.”
The story of Job is the story of any “wealthy godly sufferer.” Despite your effort to serve God with all sincerity, how do you respond to misfortunes and calamities?
We are going to continue with the story of Job for the next three days. For this reason let us not delve much into the unfolding texts; rather let us concentrate on the above cited verses.
Questions to ponder upon, “What is your regular custom in serving the Lord?” Is your wealth or work any hindrance to having a regular custom in serving the Lord? Have you made it a regular custom of daily attending Lent services in your congregation? As a wealthy and great person in a world where the emphasis is on ‘the end justifying the means,’ can it be said of you that you are blameless and upright and that you fear God and shun evil? Etc!”
Prayer for the week: Holy Spirit lead me so that my service to the Lord should be my regular custom. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working week. Have a blessed day as you make it your regular custom to excercise your faith in God through faithful service at your workplace! Peace be with you!
