“Holy Spirit Lead Me!”
John preached “a baptism of repentance for forgiveness of sins” and “all the people were being baptised…” The question has been asked in generations past and even today why is it that “Jesus was being baptised” too?
Knowing that Jesus was without sin, John tried to deter him, “I need to be baptised by you, and you come to me?” Jesus replied, Let it be so for now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfil all righeousness”(Mtt.3:13-7).
Jesus did not receive baptism for the forgiveness of sins. He received baptism to authenticate the importance of public baptism for those who come to him.
In fulfilling all righteousness by receiving baptism, God was well pleased with him. Luke stresses the importance of Jesus praying during, on or before any important divine manifestation in his life. Luke writes, “…Jesus was baptised too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove…”(Lk.3:21-23a).
The descent of the Holy Spirit on Jesus at his baptism and the voice of God from heaven saying, “You are my Son, whom I love…” completes the Holy Trinity on Jesus before the start of his ministry.
Jesus allowing himself to be baptised by John the Baptist was a mark of humility and being submissive to the will of the Father. He had no sin, so he had no reason to go for baptism, but he did. From this we can learn that you must not necessarily be wrong to receive the punishment of wrong doers, but it can be a lesson to others.
His prayerful attitude also endeared him to his Father. We learn from this the importance of prayer and how it influences our Father’s response to us. Don’t stop praying for the Holy Spirit to strengthen you and guide you in your prayers to the Father through Jesus Christ.
Prayer: Holy Spirit fill my being and guide my prayers to the Father through Jesus Christ. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
