“Your Eyes Are Blessed; Give Glory To God!”
Jesus told the disciples – and by extension to us – “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.” Jesus’ words was a reaction to the joy of the seventy-two who had been sent out to evangelize. They returned with joy because even the demons submitted to them.
Jesus is here talking of eyes that see spiritual things and ears that hear what is spiritual. Today the christian world celebrates the Holy Trinity Sunday, three persons in one God. They are not different persons. Israel was constantly reminded, “Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength…”(Dt.6:4-5ff).
We can neither see God nor hear him. “No-one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no-one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him”(Lk.10:21-24).
This mystery of God is so profound. The Son reveals the Father to us through the Holy Spirit who leads us into all truths.
To know this is to give glory to God, “for to him and through him and to him are all things…”(Rom.11:33-36).
Yes, when the disciples recounted their experience Jesus himself praised the Father for hiding this spiritual truth from the wise, yet revealing them to children.
To have discerning spiritual eyes to see the things of God you must be childlike. Act stupid, naive, childish, not being too serious about everything, having a forgiving and loving heart. Above all remaining attached in love to your parents (God); and to fellow man because “God is in the Other!”
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ thank you for sending us the Holy Spirit who has given me spiritual eyes to discern the things of God and ears to hear the words of the Lord. All praise, honour and glory be unto you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen!
Have a blessed and happy Trinity Sunday! Peace be with you!
