“The Resurrection: Truth Or Deception? Waiting For The Answer!”(Mt.27:57-66).
Today is Holy Saturday. Jesus is hanging on the cross, dead! What happened during the moment of his death sowed the seed of doubt in many people: At that moment of his death, the centurion acknowledged with certainty that surely Jesus was the Son of God.
Jesus’ killers were also in greater doubt. They were not still certain that they had accomplished their mission. “The chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate” and said, “Sir, we remember that while he was still alive, that deceiver said, ‘After three days, I will rise again.’…” They asked Pilate to “give an order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day, otherwise his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
“What would have happened to Jesus’ body if Joseph of Arimathea had not asked Pilate for the body?” “What if Pilate had refused to grant the request?”
According to Jewish law, “If someone guilty of a capital offense is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.”(Dt.21:22-23). With the Romans, the body could be exceptionally given to a family member who begged for it. Otherwise, the corpse was to rot on the cross, exposed to scavengers. At times, it could be burned or buried in an unmarked mass grave. The idea was to humiliate the person even in death.
One way or the other, the Jews would’ve lowered Jesus from the cross and put him in the ground, securing the place until after three days. They surely wanted to be sure that Jesus stayed buried to prove that they were right and Jesus was wrong.
For those who believe that Jesus is Lord, the message is clear: “Even in the grave Jesus is Lord!”
We, the believers, are in a moment of waiting! We are waiting with confidence in our beliefs. Those who think Jesus is a deceiver should continue hallucinating in their reverie!
My friend, let us continue in mourning, not as if all is lost, but as people who have trust in the LORD with whom all things are possible!
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for all you have done for me. Amen!
Have a blessed Holy Saturday! Peace be with you!
