“The Remnants Of The LORD Shall See His Glory!”(Gen.6:5-14&17-18).
At the dawn of a new day, Lord Jesus Christ, guide my feet in a closer walk with thee!
Albert Damina and our kind are nothing close to the German New Testament scholar Rudolf Bultmann. According to Bultmann, we can consider the story of Noah and the flood one of the Old Testament myths. Myths are not necessarily falsehoods even though unhistorical. The truth of a myth is existential and not literal. Myths reveal how “humans understand themselves and their relationship to God.”
To solve the problem, Bultmann postulated that we have to demythologize the myths – that is to strip away mythological elements like the supernatural events so as to “find the underlying existential message that remains relevant.”
This is not about disproving the Bible. It is about making the core message accessible, meaningful, and relevant to the modern Christian.
While some biblical scholars see Noah as a mythical figure, others see him as a historical figure. He is mentioned by Jesus and Paul. Some of the OT prophets cited him. All these establish Noah as a historical figure.
Now to Noah and the flood: “The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled…” (We are not going into the polemics of the philosophy of religion to start asking why an Omniscient God did not forsee that evil inclination of the heart of humans)?
In order to put a stop to this human evil, the LORD decided to “wipe from the face of the earth the human race…and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground – for I regret that I have made them.”
“But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD… Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and walked faithfully with God.”
Meanwhile, “the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence…”
The LORD told Noah to build an ark according to prescribed specifications, to save himself and his family and all animals and birds.
In all, only eight people were saved after the flood. Noah and his wife, his three sons, and their wives.
We do not know what percentage of the saved the eight people represents because there is no population figure of that historical time. We know for sure that the LORD is interested in a righteous and faithful remnant. We use the word “righteous and faithful” with caution. “Noah was a righteous man, and blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.” Can we vouch for his wife, their three sons, and their wives?
Some times salvation come to others, not through their own righteousness and faithful walk with God but by the righteousness and faithful walk of a Noah.
We are living in a time like in the time of Noah. We are corrupt in God’s sight and full of violence!
Every inclination of the thoughts of our hearts is only evil all the time! We select the sins we condemn and downplay those we have accommodated.
The LORD didn’t rejoice after he had destroyed the world with the flood. No! The LORD repented and said, “Never again will I curse the ground because of humans, even though every inclination of his heart is evil from childhood. And never again will I destroy all living creatures, as I have done”(Gen.8:21).
This is the reason for the coming of the Messiah. The Messiah has come so that by grace, those who believe in him will be counted among the remnants of the saved! Will you be one of them?
Sunday prayer: Holy Spirit, help me daily to strive to be righteous, blameless among the people, and walk faithfully with the LORD. Amen!

Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
