“Thank You Jesus For Revealing Your Father To Me!”
According to Luke(10:1ff), Jesus “appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go” Their mission was to heal the sick while telling them, “the kingdom of God is near you”
These guys “returned with joy” that their mission was successful. They told Jesus, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
Then we read, “at that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, ‘I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned, and revealed them to little children…All things have been committed to me by my Father. No-one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no-one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him…”
This is such a rich text, but let us focus on the joy of the seventy-two and the joy of Jesus. The seventy-two are joyful because “even the demons submit to” them in the name of Jesus. There may be a tint of ego here, but what is evident is that baby-like as they are, what had been hidden from of old had been revealed to them. The Son had revealed the erstwhile unknown Father to them. Something that many prophets and kings wanted to see but did not, and to hear but did not.
On his part, Jesus is “full of joy through the Holy Spirit. And the reaction is to burst forth in praise to the Father.
My friend, when you send out disciples two by two, or when you are sent out, what is your mission? Is it to heal the sick, tell them about the nearness of the kingdom of God and call them to repentance? Or is it to see how you build your own kingdom?
What is your source of joy? Is it because you have a successful mission for the Lord in his name and to the glory of God? Or is it because you have succeeded to consolidate your gains?
How many who have built their kingdoms and empires in God’s name care whether souls of men wander and rot in unrepentance?
Through Jesus Christ God has revealed hidden things to us. When we know this truth we would seek only God’s glory in what we achieve in the name of Jesus!
Paul says, “Rejoice in the Lord always: I will say it again: Rejoice!”(Phi. 4:4). May you burst forth in praise to God because you are filled with joy through the Holy Spirit! Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
