“Overcome Evil With Good!”
Paul’s message to the Romans speaks to us in claimant tones as if we are not third party recipients!
In undiluted language he writes, “Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: ‘It is mine to avenge; I will repay’… On the contrary: ‘If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.’ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”(12:17-21).
The text is so self explanatory that the only reflection I can add to it is, “Please, let us live these pieces of advise in our daily Christian pilgrimage. If we do so, our world would become a better place than we met it.”
That notwithstanding, there are three points worth commenting upon. Concerning living in peace with everyone, what Paul implies is that it is probable but somehow impossible, just as it is possible. It is a matter of “will power” – meaning “peace is possible” if we so desire it at all cost!
Secondly, Paul advises that we “leave room for God’s wrath…” Don’t always say “I must backam!” or, “I will deal with you!” Etc!
And lastly, do not insist on paying back in his own coin any person who has wronged you. “Two wrongs don’t make a right,” it only creates a “vicious circle!”
My friend, the greatest victory you can have over your enemy is to “overcome evil with good!” God did just that for us when he sacrificed his Son on the cross! Why not you?
Prayer: Lord humble me and teach me to live and let others live. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
