“Obedience…!”

“Obedience…!”(Gen.22:15-19).
God called Abraham(His name was still Abram) saying, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.” God also made a promise to Abraham which had a sevenfold structure. The fourth of this structure up to the seventh is how we come to share in the blessing of a promise made to Abraham to whom we are not related by blood. “You will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
The promise depended on OBEDIENCE. God told Abraham, “Leave your country…” After the promise we are told, “So Abraham left…”(Gen.12:1-4). This is to say, Abraham obeyed God.
Obedience is the action that accompanies belief. If Abraham had not believed in the LORD he would not have obeyed the LORD. To this end it is written that Abraham “believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness”(Gen.15:6).
The depth of Abraham’s obedience was shown when he obeyed God and went to sacrifice Isaac without any hesitation.
This act of obedience melted the LORD’s heart and he said, “I swear by myself that because you have done this and have not withheld you son, your only son, I will surely bless you…and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed because you have obeyed me.”
Abraham’s obedience is the obedience that has brought us salvation and made us his descendants by adoption. From Abraham’s bloodline came the Messaiah to fulfil the LORD’s promise to Abraham that through his offspring all nations on earth will be blessed.
Lesson from Abraham’s story: We should learn to believe God and obey him. Then in the same way that we are blessed because of Abraham’s obedience, so too may others be blessed through our obedience.
Prayer: Holy Spirit teach me so that by believing and obeying the LORD I may become a source of blessing to others. Amen!
