“Make Christ Your Peace Today!”
By the grace of God I have been a minister of the Word and Sacrament for twenty-six years. I have also been humbled by being chosen to lead part of his flock, the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon (PCC); a church of above a million adherents.
My observation during these years of ministry is that there is so much strife and bigotry in the body of Christ. The hatred and evil machinations within the church most times generated by the clergy and spilling over in the Christians is abhorrent. And it is the very reason why there can be no true peace in the land!
This is a bitter truth that we hate to pronounce, yet this is what we experience in frightening proportions!
Down memory lane we can cite the senseless series of crusades that took hundreds of thousands of human lives, just to recapture or reclaim the Holy land. What about the hundreds of thousands of Hugeonuts killed in France just to silence Protestantism!
Can we cite the number of “Murder in the Cathedral” kind of eliminations that have taken place and go unnoticed? Or the many unchronicled “In God’s Name” kind of silencing within the body of Christ?
Of course, we may argue that the very nature of his death was already an indicator of how the church he founded would survive!
The church founded on the gruesome murder of her founder has outwardly preached peace because the founder is the “Prince of Peace.” But inwardly she thrives on violence, strife, divisions and killings masterminded by power hungry bigots bent on achieving personal ends!
Prior to his coming it was prophesied that the Christ “will stand and shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord…And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach the ends of the earth. And he will be their peace”(Mic. 5:2-5).
Today in our homeland like it is in some parts of the world and as has been the experience of many countries in the past, clergy and Christians alike are killed without compunction! Administrators order that church houses be closed on Sundays and no church service to hold! The fighters of selfhood deny Christians the privilege of celebrating Christmas! Military invade church houses and make it their barracks, and while there they desecrate the Holy things of God!
In the midst of all these we are comforted that Christ will be our peace.
How does this come about with all the wars that we are waging in our hearts against each other? My friend, peace begins with me, it begins with you! Peace does not happen in a vacuum, nor does it happen because we mount the pulpit and preach it! Peace happens when we have it in our hearts!
If Christ is your peace, let him dwell in your heart and motivate your decisions and actions! And like a pebble thrown into calm waters, its rippling effects would spread wider and wider so that Christ becomes our peace!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
