“Leadership As Service To Humanity!”(Mk.10:35-45).
Grassfield wisdom holds that the dog is not on the chase because it wants to catch the prey for its master. Hunters often testify how they sometimes use force to seize a game from the claws of a dog.
Blind following is hard to come by! Nobody wants to follow where there may be nothing to gain. The Twelve who were close to the Lord were not different from the rest of us. Vaunting ambition was inert in all of them.
Yesterday we read how Peter said to Jesus, “We have left everything to follow you.” We said inherent in the statement was the unasked question, “So what is there for us?”
In the same chapter the secret ambitions of all Twelve revealed itself when James and John, the sons of Zebedee went to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask.” Their request was so ambitious, and way beyond the power of Jesus to execute. Hear them: “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.” What effrontery!
To proof how each of them, like a dog was hunting for himself, “When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John.” We may ask, “why were they indignant?” Possibly because each of them nursed the hope of having one of those prestigious positions! And now two brothers wanted it for themselves as if it was a family affair!
It is not different today where nepotism and tribalism is the order of the day both within the sacred and the secular!
Jesus told them as he is telling us today that it is not for him to decide who sits at his right or left. “These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”
He went further to school them as he is schooling us that, unlike secular leadership where rulers lord it over their subjects and the officials excercise authority, it should not be so with those who are called to lead in the service of the Lord.
Leadership in the service of God is servanthood; whereas in the secular sphere rulership is lording over with authority.
Unfortunately…!
Dear friend, following the Lord Jesus Christ is so much about how much you put in for the service of humanity and not how much you take out. It is about serving, it is not about being served.
The right and left are positions of authority, whereas what is expected is the position of service! It is about your utmost for his Highest!
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit instil in me the spirit of servanthood leadership. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
Rev Babila Fochang.
