When Jesse Jackson came second in the nomination for Vice the Presidency of the USA he made a speech captioned, “Keep Hope Alive.” Among other things he said, “Use hope and imagination as weapons of survival and progress…Dream of teachers who teach for life and not for a living. Dream of doctors who are concerned more about public health than private wealth. Dream of lawyers more concerned about justice than a judgeship. Dream of preachers who are concerned more about prophecy that profiteering. Dream on the highway of sound values… Keep hope alive. Keep hope alive. Keep hope alive. On tomorrow night and beyond, keep hope alive…”
Yes my friend, preparing for Christmas centres on how to keep hope alive! We are witnesses to the times and circumstances we are living in as a people. Without hope we would only be living in dejection, despair, frustration and resignation to fate! On the contrary, when we keep hope alive, we seize our dependence on fate and rest it confidently on faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The writer of the letter to the Hebrews gives us such assurance in our time. “…we are confident of better things in your case – things that accompany salvation.” The reason for our joy in this hope is that “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them….” So therefore, do not become lazy, rather you should “imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.”
Be deligent to the end “in order to make your hope sure”(Heb.6:9-12). Above all, “Keep hope alive!”
Weekend prayer: Lord inspire me to keep hope alive through faith and diligence so that I can inherit my promised inheritance. Amen!
