“Like Jesus, Rule Like The One Who Serves!”
I use to be comfortable to know that the Lord “prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies”(Ps.23:5). I have however been humbled by the Lord to recognise that such a table is not in this life. It is in the kingdom of Jesus Christ where we would eat and drink and sit on thrones.
While we are in this life our kingship is in humble service and not rulership where we excercise worldly authority. It is not by making ourselves Benefactors – better known today as “Godfathers” or “Spiritual fathers!” When we excercise such Gentile lordship, those who do not align with us are treated like orphans, while the mediocre run and trample where angels fear to tiptoe!
Jesus excercised his ministry here on earth as one who serves. Even today he still reminds us, “I am among you as one who serves.” He was the begotten Son of God, yet he did not consider it as anything. He devoted his time to serve the despised and the scum of the earth. Whether among the lower, middle or upper classes, he did not express his Lordship. On the contrary he was and is constantly in service to whosoever needs his services, especially those without the means to fend for themselves.
Jesus expects us to be the same like him. “The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.”
What is interesting is that Jesus agrees that those who have stood by him in his trials deserve some reward(Lk.22:24-30). To this end, the reward for leading as servants is that he has conferred on us a kingdom just as his Father conferred on him.
Yes, those who stand by us in the time of our trials deserve some reward. That of course does not become a license for favouring those who share in our malignant intrigues at the expense of faithful and merited servants. Serve in humility knowing that those who have stood by Jesus in times of his trials shall eat and drink at his table in his kingdom!
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, let me be among my people as one who serves until that day when I shall eat and drink at your table in your kingdom. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
