“Jesus, Write The New Covenant On My Heart!”
“Cerebral Christianity” as Archbishop Desmond Tutu once qualified our inherited faith is a hindrance to inner spiritual growth. If this is what mainline denominations inherited, the new breed of Pentecostal and Charismatic Christianity in a bid to lead the continent into that missing inner spiritual growth has brought in a new kind of deepening spirituality which can be qualified in the majority as “brainwashed faith.”
Both ways we are either celebrative Christians not being able to draw the line between being in the world and not belonging to the world, or we celebrate our “daddies” and “mummies” in the Lord who almost replaces God in our hearts.
The day before his death Jesus and the twelve, just like the rest of the Jews celebrated the Passover meal. In the course of celebration Jesus filled it with “new content” as he called the bread his body and the wine his “blood of the new covenant which is to be poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins…”(Mtt.26:27-28).
Today we commemorate the institution of this new covenant. However we have been commemorating it more by re-enacting the celebration but having lost track of its significance; which is the deep inner spiritual transformation it ought to be in each of us.
That is why like the Corinthians we can easily leave the Lord’s table straight to another pagan feast be it “kontry fashion” or worst still an esoteric fraternity all of which are antichrist. Paul admonishes, “You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons”(I Cor.10:16-21).
Dear friend, when we go astray God has a way of bringing us back to the right path. No matter which interpretation we give to it, the lockdown caused by COVID-19, coinciding with the season of Lent is an opportunity for personal deeper inner reflection to each and everyone.
It gives us ample opportunity to find out without the aid of anybody whether the new covenant is in you or in the sacraments you take. It enables us that while we stay home to stay safe, we should be immersed in the word of God to stay saved!
God said by the new covenant “I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbour, or a man his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me from the least of them to the greatest…”(Jer.31:31-34). Maybe that is why COVID-19 is not a respecter of persons!
Prayer: Holy Spirit make my heart a residence of the new covenant so that I should know the Lord without being taught. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
