“Jesus Christ Is A Scapegoat For Your Sake!”
“The word ‘scapegoat’ is commonly understood as ‘a person who is blamed for the wrong doings, mistakes, or faults of others, especially for reasons of expediency.”
Here is the biblical origin of scapegoat. On the day of Atonement “when Aaron has finished making atonement for the Most Holy place, the Tent of Meeting and the alter, he shall bring forward the live goat. He is to lay both hands on the head of the live goat and confess over it all the wickedness and rebellion of the Israelites – all their sins – and put them on the goat’s head. He shall send the goat away into the desert in the care of a man appointed for the task. The goat will carry on itself all their sins to a solitary place; and the man shall release it in the desert “(Lev. 16:20-22).
This innocent goat had to wander in the desert until it died of starvation or eaten by wild animals. The innocent goat had to die for sins it did not commit.
Over the years, and even right now in our midst, in both church and state many are victims of scapegoatism. Innocent people are framed up and stigmatized, tabooed or incacerated for offences they know nothing about, meanwhile the perpetrators cross their legs and pop champagne!
In Africa the innocent goat is still a scapegoat used in various contexts to appease the gods for the sins of people. The the day of Atonement was an annual rite. It was annual because humanity is prone to sin. Jesus Christ became the perfect scapegoat who carried, and is still carrying the sins of humanity once and for all.
Just like the goat of Levicticus Jesus was without sin, but our sins have been laid upon him. God through his exalted Son has done this much for us. All he now wants from us is obedience to do his will because through the blood of his Son he is not counting any sin against us.
Prayer: Thank you Lord Jesus Christ for being the scapegoat who has carried my sins away. You alone I will follow and obey. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
