“In Everything Always Give Thanks To God The Father!”
A man caught a pangolin and did not know how to kill it. When he returned home he heard people singing nearby to his home. He went to the place where they were singing, took the rattle and asked in song, “If you catch a pangolin what do you do with it?” Somebody answered in the chorus, “If you catch a pangolin boil water and put the pangolin inside the water. He left the place went home and did just that.
The African is a singing being. Almost everyone is a musician because singing is learned by rote. However most songs are composed through the influence of alcohol in “mandjong” houses and funerals where alcohol is usually in abundance.
Christians may be let to the same temptation to compose and sing songs after being filled with the spirit of alcohol.
Paul urges us not to get drunk on wine which leads to debauchery. “Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
My friend, do you remember those childhood days when you used to quarell over songs? You hear expressions like, “why are you singing my song?, I started the song first…” We need those childlike attitudes to speak to one another with “psalms, hymns and spiritual songs.”
Paul knows that we all can sing, but which kind of songs is it that you are singing? Make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father.
In all these, “be very careful…how you live – not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity because the days are evil…do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is…”(Eph.5:15-20).
It is true that we pray at least once a day, “…thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven…,” but do we understand what that will is?
Learn to be wise, be filled with the Spirit and glorify God in songs that edifies the spirit of your listeners.
Prayer of the week: Holy Spirit guide me to understand the Lord’s will for this week and to act on it accordingly. Amen!
Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
