“Humble Service!”(Mt.23:1-12).
O LORD our God, at the dawn of a new day, we look up to you from where our help comes.
When the animals took over Jones’ farm and chased him away, they had the following seven commandments:
- Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy.
- Whatever goes upon four legs or has wings is a friend.
- No animal shall wear clothes.
- No animal shall sleep in a bed.
- No animal shall drink alcohol.
- No animal shall kill any other animal.
- All animals are equal.
There was a popular chant, “Four legs good, two legs better.” When the pigs emerged as the replacement of Jones and soon decided to walk on two legs, the chant was changed to “Four legs good, two legs better.”
It was not long that the pigs, by their own command, found comfort sleeping in beds with blankets.
Commandment seven was modified to “All animals are equal, but some are more equal.”
Those who formulate laws and enforce them should also submit to those laws. For some people to be above the law for any reason whatsoever is doublestandard!
The doublestandards of (the pigs) leaders – especially those who are authorised successors of Moses as teachers of the law – are hypocrisy at its peak.
We do not impose the law on others, and even when we realise they are suffocating under its weight, we refuse to make concessions. Sadly, the people see us(pigs) walking on four legs and sleeping on comfortable beds, yet enforcing on them that “four legs good, two legs bad.”
To counter this hypocrisy, the Lord Jesus Christ beckons: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am Gentile and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light”(Mt.11:28-30).
We have a responsibility to offer our services to fellow humans in whatever task working “heartily as serving the Lord and not man.” We should not work or do anything trying to impress others or to become the centre of attention.
We should be gentle and humble in heart in the same way as our Lord Jesus Christ.
The Lord’s teaching is not as burdensome. First, we believe in him as Son of God, who has died for us, grace and mercy finds us.
We are the light of the world, a city set upon a hill that can not be hidden. We do not have to draw attention to ourselves through any publicity stunts.
Christians at whatever level of leadership are servantleaders.
It is unfortunate that those in the civil and public services forget too soon that they are public servants and civil servants.
We should learn to be humble, and we would be exalted, but if we exalt ourselves, we may have a worse fall than Humpty Dumpty.
My friend, let us be humble so that through the Holy Spirit, God’s grace and mercy find and keep us in the Lord, where in response, we do the works of faith.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, help us daily to humble ourselves in the service of the Lord; whatever is our calling. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
