“Holy Spirit Teach Me To Learn From The Lessons Of The Past!”
In the second stanza of Cameron’s National Anthem are these lines,
“…Instill in them the love of gentle ways,
Regret the errors of the past;
Foster for Mother Africa a loyalty
That true shall remain to the last.”
Happenings of the past are yardsticks to remind our present so that history does not repeat itself. There is no importance in studying history if we do not learn from it to correct ourselves.
A page in Israel’s history reminds us that being baptized in Christ and favoured by God does not put us right with God permanently.
“…God was not pleased with some of them.” The things that happened to them are examples “to keep us from setting our minds on evil things as they did. We shouldn’t be idolaters as some of them were because this will lead us to indulge in pagan revelry.
“We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did – and in one day twenty thousand of them died. We should not test the Lord, as some of them did – and were killed by snakes. And do not grumble, as some of them did – and were killed by the destroying angel.
These things happened to them as examples and were writtendown as warnings for us, on whom the fulfilment of the age has come. So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall. No temptation has siezed you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand under it” (I Cor. 10:1-13).
My friend, are you standing firm? Be careful that you don’t fall!”
Learn a lesson not only from Israel’s past but from your own past. Whatever happened even to you in the past should be a warning to guard against in the present and the future!
Weekend prayer: Lord I know I may be standing firm, when I’m tempted provide a way out for me to be able to stand under it. Amen!
Have a blessed weekend! Peace be with you!
