“Glory Be To God On High…!”(Lk.2:1-20).
Where I come from, it is said that only a woman can tell the true mother of her child. A DNA test is not necessary if a woman decides to open up. Take it that the story of the Visitation was not known by others, and if Joseph was like young men of our time who want to taste before buying Mary would have naively sworn that the baby belonged to Joseph.
Today, we move away from the Visitation to the Nativity. The story of the Nativity is a continuation of the narrative that God has a level playground where equal opportunities are not mere paperwork.
The story of the Nativity is also about a poor struggling village carpenter succumbing to the edict of a powerful Caesar, within the jurisdiction of a governor. Yet, amidst these big names, a village carpenter and his young innocent wife with doubtful pregnancy obeyed the emperor’s decree of doing a census only in one’s natal village.
While in Joseph’s natal village, it was only an inn that was available for them to put up. It was then that Mary had to be delivered of her baby. “And she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.” This baby was placed in a manger.
Can you imagine! The birth of the man soon to have the world’s greatest positive impact is first announced to shepherds keeping watch over their flocks at night.
My friend, God is not a respecter of persons! God has made a level playing ground for all humanity. He can use anyone who makes self available. He takes from nothing and transforms into something!
At the commemoration of the birth of Christ, we can only say, “Dear LORD, use us anyhow and anywhere you want!”
Like the lowly shepherds of years ago, we should join in the best ever Christmas carol to sing, Glory be to God on high, and peace on earth towards men of goodwill!
Prayer: Holy Spirit, give me a discerning spirit so that I can appreciate the unfolding plans of God. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you! Merry Christmas and a fulfilling New Year to you and your family!
