“Enter Jerusalem As A Donkey!”(Mt.21:1-11).
Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem was on a donkey, yet the crowds recognised him as “Jesus the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.” We affirm that Jesus is the king of kings or king above all kings! In the days of old, kings rode on horses to distinct themselves as nobility. Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey that is a beast of burden. The donkey is a lowly animal “known for being intelligent yet stubborn.”
For Jesus to enter Jerusalem on a donkey is a mark of the continuation of his humility and obedience even on to death.
My friend, I have this one Palm Sunday story for us today, which continues the teaching on humility. During the time of my schooling in South Africa and Ghana and my time of attending many conferences within the continent, I have worshipped in many Pentecostal churches that I can hardly remember. In one of those churches in Ghana I went home with this message that has remained indelible in my head: the preacher said, “I will prefer to enter Jerusalem with Jesus as a donkey because it was the donkey that walked on the palm fronts that were strewn on the road for Jesus to walk on.” So you see, being lowly and humble does not lower you as some of us think.
Last evening, I had the opportunity to mix with the cream of Bali society. A number of people were surprised to see me coordinating a part of the program and greeting all the cream of Bali who were present, not by handshakes, but by embraces. Such intimacy didn’t make me important; rather, it showed how humbled those great men and women are! So my friend, if there is anything I want us to learn from the triumphant entry today, it is that be humble and submissive to the LORD so that he can fulfil his will through you.
Sunday prayer: Holy Spirit, teach me the virtue of humility and help me to practice it daily. Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
