“Enhance The Unity In The Body Of Christ!”
We so often hear expressions like, “salvation is personal.” Salvation may be personal but man is a social animal and cannot live like an island. To obey and practice the command to love your neighbour as yourself, you must first of all have a neighbour.
Imagine the body of Christ where each person is living in his or her own seperate shell like cashew nuts! There would be no opportunity for individuals to grow spiritually. We need each other to grow in faith. Africans know that “The river meandered because it flowed alone” and “the fly which had no-one to advise it accompanied the corpse into the grave.”
“Unity is strength” because “one hand cannot tie a bundle.” When we sing, “we are one, O O we are together…” that same song should teach us that as Christians we are one big family; our diversities notwithstang. We should and must be one another’s keeper.
Paul urges each one of us: “…live a life worthy of the calling you have received. Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit – just as you were called to one hope when you were called – one Lord, one faith, one baptism; and one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all” (Eph.4:1-6).
Some times we capitalise so much on the liitle doctrinal differences that divide us instead of focusing on the fundamentals of the faith that should and must keep us together.
It is important that in your little corner you should do what it takes to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. These words of Paul are so important that they constitute part of the liturgy for the Lord’s Supper in many denominations.
Weekend prayer: Holy Spirit enable me to live a life worthy of my Christian calling by keeping the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Amen!
My friend, extend a hand of fellowship to the other brethren and greet, “Bros/Sis, we are one. Peace be with you!”
