“Do Not Reproach The Prophet, Rather Repent…!”
Jeremiah is sometimes called a “melancholic prophet.” God called him to be a prophet out of a priestly family, so he was already familiar with the religious practices of his time and how it was often more to please the king than tell the truth.
His first excuse for not wanting to be a prophet was that he was a child and slow of speech.
God told him that should be the least of his worries. Maybe from now on Jeremiah thought his prophetic calling was going to be smooth-sailing. How mistaken he was! The threat to his life for speaking the truth and being mocked at was more than he could bear.
In our text today he laid a deserved complain to God. For him God gave him false assurance and each time he opened his mouth to speak he was ridiculed and mocked at. It couldn’t have been otherwise because each time he prohesied he talked of violence and destruction that was about to befall the land if the people did not repent. These words brought to him nothing but “insult and reproach all day long.” When faced with such opposition and threats to his life he felt like, “I will not mention or speak anymore in his name.” But then at such moments God’s word was in his heart like fire and he couldn’t stop speaking the message given to him.
The good news is that at the end of the day he saw the need to “Sing to the Lord! Give praise to the Lord!” Because “He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked”(Jer.20:7-13).
My friend, whatever the threats to your life speak God’s word as it burns in you like fire. He is always there to rescue the life of the needy.
Prayer: Lord do not let your word return to you without impacting the lives of those who hear and do what you want. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
