“Come To Jesus The Great Physician For Free Treatment!”
A major characteristic of Matthew’s gospel is what some call the “prophetic formula.” Jesus did things to “fulfill what was spoken through the prophet…” The Jews who failed to recognize in Jesus the messianic fulfilment were ignorant of their own holy Scriptures.
In the text for reflection Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law in Peter’s house. This is a show of intimacy and humility. When was the last time you a senior or superior went to the home of a junior or a mentee?
Jesus did not only go to Peter’s house, he healed Peter’s mother-in-law of fever by a mere touch of her hand. He went to her bedside. These are marks of simplicity which we should emulate.
When healed the lady immediately engaged herself in serving her son-in-law and all his guests. A lesson from her is that we are healed to serve others.
Wherever Jesus is present becomes a healing centre or hospital. In the evening many demon-possessed “were brought to him and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick.”
In this short but weigthy passage we see the remedial potency of touch and the spoken word. At a street corner was a beggar whose livelihood depended on alms. One day he stretched his hand out to a passerby and asked for a gift. The man stopped, looked him in the face and placing his hand on the beggar’s shoulder he said, “My brother, I have nothing to give you.” On his part the beggar replied, “You have given me everything I ever needed and never received. You touched me and called me brother.” The most intimate language is expressed through touch.
All the healings Jesus effected “was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah: ‘He took our infirmities and carried our diseases” (Mtt.8:14-17).
Jesus is our burden carrier and heals all diseases. Peter tells us to cast all our anxieties on Jesus because he cares for us (I Pt.5:7).
My friend, if your sickness is not physical, it is either emotional, psychological or spiritual. Invite Jesus to your space (home and heart) and he will heal you by touch or word or by both. Also remember that somewhere near you there is somebody just like the beggar who needs comfort and healing from your touch and soothing words.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ touch me and speak healing to my soul so that I may be of service to you by serving others. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
