“Come Out From Them And Be Seperate!”
Once upon a time in Australia aboriginal kids were forcefully taken away from their parents. The misguided assumption was that by bringing up the children in a new white community, a new breed of Australians would come into existence. It ended up a fiasco!
The Basel missionaries in Ghana created Christian villages at missionary stations. When Ghanaians were converted to Christianity they were removed from among their people and settled in the Christian villages. When in later days they came to work in Cameroon they were no longer enthusiastic about the idea. They realised that the Ghanaian experiment was not a success story. The Christian village did not stand the test of time because taking a convert out from among his people and keeping him apart was like removing a seedling for transplant without any of the soil on which the seed was nursed.
The origins of monastic life was the intention to be seperated from the main because of it’s inadequacy to obey Holy Scriptures.
The above Christian stories were based on the interpretation of some parts of Scriptures. One of those Scriptures is from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians: “Do not be yoked with unbelivers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? For we are the temple of the living God…’Therefore, come out from them and be seperate…'”
If to “come out from them and be seperate” means territorial separation, it will be impossible to fulfil the mission of the great commission. Believers have no choice than to continue to live among the unbelievers. Believers are in the world, but they do not belong to the world (Jn.17:14 -16).
Believers should come out from them and be seperate in that our way of life should be a mirror through which the unbelievers see Jesus Christ. It means we are not like dogs going back to our own vomits!
So therefore my friend, “let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God “(II Cor.6:14-7:1).
Let us come out from them and be seperate by making a difference, shining the light of Christ in a dark and perverted world!
Prayer: Holy Spirit help me to be the difference by shining the light of Christ in this life. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
