“Christ The Mediator Of A New Covenant!”(Heb.9:15-22).
Christological titles in the letter to the Hebrews include High priest, Lamb of sacrifice, Mediator and Christ.
Today we focus on the title of Mediator. A mediator is “a person who tries to end a disagreement by helping the two sides to talk about and agree on a solution…” A mediator’s role is “to bridge the interests of two opposing parties by defining their issues and eliminating obstacles to communication. They guide the conversation and the process to minimize or eliminate confrontation and ill will.”
We see that Christ fits very well as a mediator between God and fallen humanity. Here Christ is seen as the mediator of a “new covenant;” presupposing that the terms of the old covenant has been grossly misused and abused thus making it useless.
For Christ to perform the task of mediator, he also volunteered to willingly become the lamb of sacrifice that faces all the violations that created the chasm between the two parties.
The first agreement was drawn and sealed with blood; so too the new agreement had to be sealed with blood. The weakness of the old covenant was in its need for an annual renewal with the blood of animals. As mediator of the new covenant Jesus offered himself as a once for all animal of sacrifice because after that, he became eternally Christ and a superior high priest in heaven, the place of originality.
In the past, blood was sprinkled on humans and objects for cleansing, and Moses said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you…”(Ex.24:4).
In his last meal with the Twelve, Jesus offered them a drink saying, “This is my blood of the covenant which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins”(Mt.26:27-28).
The new covenant was possible only through the atoning blood of Christ – a replacement of the blood of bulls, etc.
Jesus willingly shed his blood in fulfilment of the law because “Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.” The good news is that the blood he shed elevated him to be the Christ who continues to mediate with the Father on our behalf.
The least, which, of course, is the only necessary route of salvation is to believe in him through faith so that his sacrifice does not go in vain!
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, we believe in you that you died as a ransom for us to receive our promised eternal inheritance. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
