“Christ Must Become Greater, I Must Become Less!”
When the leader of a symphony orchestra was asked which instrument lacked players, he answered, “Second fiddle. Everybody wants to play first fiddle.”
In our time it is not just that each person wants to be seen as the best, we the wo/men of God do encourage them in this direction. What else would you expect when you pronounce on your Christians, “You must be the head and not the tail!”
Is it possible for all to become heads, such that there are no tails?
Unfortunately, these days even when you play first fiddle, you may consider whoever is playing second fiddle to be a threat! There are also those who can generate tension and animosity where none would have existed.
A case in point from which we must draw vital lessons for our time is John’s attitude towards Jesus’ ministry. Some “wedge putters” “came to John and said to him, ‘Rabbi, that man who was with you… – the one you testified about – well, he is baptizing, and everyone is going to him.'”
If they thought John would become jealous and get into rivalry, then they were mistaken!
John had a humble answer: “A man can receive only what is given to him from heaven…The bride belongs to the bridegroom…” John reminded them that he had acknowledged, “I am not the Christ but am sent ahead of him… He must become greater; I must become less”(Jn. 3:22-30).
Each one of us is like a grain of sand in the quantity of sand used in constructing a gigantic structure. The grains of sand used in making the blocks to raise the walls are no less important than the ones that were mixed with cement to hold the foundation together!
Those who want to receive more than what heaven gives do not realise that they are overloaded! The legendary king Arthur learned this when it was too late, “The old order changes and gives way to the new…!”
You may be the most trusted “Best man,” remember, “The bride belongs to the bridegroom…” It is always a thing of joy when we see those whom we have groomed excelling as they rise! Our joy becomes complete when we see them rise.
Nothing lasts forever! When it was time to exit the stage, the great men whom we knew went honourably and with joy, giving way to others!
My friend, four vital lessons for you and I today:
1. Do not get jealous because everyone is going to the one you testified about.
2. Be discerning in spirit to recognise that “A man can receive only what is given him from heaven.” What you take by force, manipulation and deception does not bring you any honour!
3. Be humble to accept that there comes a time when some must become greater while you must become less! That’s a law of nature!
But above and beyond all, our testimonies must be to introduce and raise the kingship of Christ to the glory of God! Do not claim for yourself what belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ alone!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
