“Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation!”(I Cor.3:11-25).
Thank you, LORD, for another day of grace.
Back in the 50s, H. Richard Niebuhr published the book “Christ and Culture.” In the book, Niebuhr presents five models: Christ against culture, Christ of culture, Christ above culture, Christ and culture, a paradox, and Christ the transformer of culture.
The central question concerns how Christians should engage with the world of God’s creation corrupted by sin. Any of the five models finds credence in the theology of one or two writers of the New Testament.
Niebuhr concludes by stating that Christ and culture is a perennial issue that cannot be given a definitive answer. To force a conclusive answer is to “usurp the Lordship of Christ,” thus falling into the trap of identifying Christ with a specific transient culture. Each Christian and community can resolve the issue only through free, responsible decision made in faith within their specific historical context.
Denominational and Secterian doctrines may differ, but the foundation must be Christ. Once we know this, we may not have to push the messengers to fight each other, and we may not oppose or challenge the doctrinal positions of others. At the end of the day, we are all blindmen defining the elephant by the part we have touched.
A background check on the fomentors of the divisions in the cosmopolitan Corinth congregation would reveal that it was more about which model of Christ and culture should be accepted.
We may be as zealous as the servants who wanted to pull out the weeds that the enemy planted among the wheat; but Christ himself cautions us to allow the weed to grow alongside the wheat. At harvest time, the weed will be pulled out, tied in sheafs, and burned. Meanwhile, the wheat will be harvested and stored in the barn.
The day of the LORD will determine the calibre of each person’s work with commensurate rewards.
Whoever is building on a foundation other than Christ has started on a false premise, and the conclusion can’t be valid.
Any foundation other than Christ is idolatory!
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, you are the Solid Rock on which I stand; all other ground is sinking sand. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
