“By God’s Grace!”(Rom.4:13-17).
If you are a Protestant, know that this is the basis of your faith: “…the righteous person will live by his faith”(Hab.2:4). Even when James writes that “faith without works is dead”(Jm.2:17), he is not contradicting Habakkuk. On the contrary, “James complements this theme by defining faith as a living, active trust, not just mental agreement.” True faith results in good works.
We are saved by grace, and good works are proof of what grace has done.
Abraham is not called “The Father of Faith” because of good works. “Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.” “Abraham and his offspring received the promise…through the righteousness that comes by faith.”
The story is told of a clergy who was proned to stay up long in the night worrying about his parishioners. One night, the LORD told him, “Go to sleep and leave the worrying to me.”
We are living at a time when progress centres around strategic planning, how to meet productive deadlines. Etc! Even so, unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labour in vain.
Works depend on effort. Faith depends on confident hope in God’s promise, realised through his sufficient grace.
No matter how hard we work for it, we are not going to be saved because we worked for it. If it were so, then Christ died for nothing.
“Promise comes by faith, so that it may be guaranteed to all… not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham.” Abraham “is the father of us all.”
My friend, keep the faith! Stand on the promises of God, which cannot fail! Believe in Jesus Christ, who is the source of grace. To top it all, let good works be the proof that you are rooted in Christ the Saviour!
The promises are sure. They may not be visible yet. It may not happen in your youth, but your offspring will inherit it. Believe in “the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.”
Where you are today is not where you were yesterday and where you will be tomorrow is not in the plan that you have made. Just stand on the promises of God.
Prayer: Holy Spirit, guide me daily to strengthen my faith as I stand on the promises of God and let good works be the proof of my faith. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
