“Beware Of Crafty People!”
The story of the fall of humankind is the story of a crafty creature who used his wiles to outwit a crafty woman and succeeded to turn them against God. It is a story of enticement and seduction leading to outright disobedience. It is the story of a blatant denial of divine pronoucement! It is the story of two creatures engaged in a dialogue which led to an action that changed the course of human history (Gen.3:1-7).
It has often been said that Africans have a shame culture and not a guilt conscience. This is surely not unique to Africans. The story of the fall is a story of how sin opens our eyes and exposes us to our nakedness and brings us shame.
To be crafty is being “clever at achieving one’s aims by indirect or deceitful methods.” May be by this definition you can already visualise some crafty people you have encountered. Truth be told: crafty people know they are crafty and they play on the psyche of the gullible and get what they want.
In the beginning the crafty serpent twisted God’s words and used half truths to convince a crafty woman who herself embellished and distorted God’s words with falsehood.
My friend, not all that glitters is gold. Eve fell for the three aspects of temptation. She “saw that the fruit…was good and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom” and she fell for it! These three aspects of temptation are the same that this crafty creature used to tempt Jesus (cf. Lk.4:3,5,9). No doubt John writes, “For everything in the world – the cravings of the sinful man, the lust of the eyes and the boasting of what he has and does – comes not from the Father but from the world”(I Jn.2:16).
So therefore my dear friend fix your eyes on the cross and do not listen to the voice of a stranger!
Prayer: Lord, turn my eyes from looking at vanities so that I may have life in all your ways. Amen!
Welcome back to a new working week! Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you!
