“Belonging To The Truth!”(I Jn.3:19-24).
Holy Spirit, as I enter a new day, enable me to see God’s image in all those I interact with.
A God-fearing family offered a promotion scholarship in Cameroon Protestant College (CPC) Bali to the indigenous students of Lower Sixth. The scholarship of 50,000Frs CFA was to be the winner’s part fee of the next academic year in Upper Sixth.
During closing of the academic year, the scholarship was awarded to Sama – to the shock of his classmates. Sema, his friend and classmate had scored higher than him.
When they returned to their dormitory, they discussed and wondered among themselves what must have happened. Sema laughed over the matter, and they let it slide. Meanwhile, the college secretary went to the principal and pointed out the error showing the results, which put Sema ahead of Sama. The principal claimed that he didn’t know Sema was an indegene – even when he used to have deep conversation with Sema’s father each time he came to pay Sema’s fees. Summarily, during the next academic year, the scholarship was given to Sema and not to Sama.
Truth is very stubborn; it refuses to be buried! Many have walked out of court jubilating for having won a case which in their hearts they know they have not won!
We can say truth is like interpreting 6 in opposite directions. Depending on why we want to justify that it is nine and not six, and even if we win, do we feel justified that we have won?
We are tempted to find out the origins of bribery. The primary purpose of a bribe is to subvert truth and the rule of law for personal interest.
In other words, a bribe is intended to promote a lie over truth. If that is so, can you bribe yourself?
Truth lies within. The truth within is stubborn; it cannot be bribed by its owner!
Children of God, called in Christ, belong to the truth. But how do we know that we belong to the truth?
This is John’s gospel answer: “This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God’s commands lives in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.”
Self-reflection: Do I live in God, and does he live in me?
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, I believe in your name. Help me each day to love others as the Father commanded. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
