“Believe The LORD’s Message To You Will Come True!”(Lk.1:39-45).
We thank God for another day and week. Christmas day is just a few days away. Today we continue to reflect on the part of the story preceding the birth of the Messaiah. According to Luke after the angel promised Mary that she was the favoured of the LORD, Mary paid a visit to Elizabeth who was a few months pregnant after years of barrenness.
Elizabeth testifies about the divinity of Christ as she told Mary, “as soon as I heard your greeting, the baby within me jumped with gladness.”
Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit at Mary’s visit. It was a great honour for the Lord’s mother to visit her.
Here are two women who by human estimation should not be pregnant. Elizabeth was in her menopause when she got pregnant and Mary was a virgin when she conceived by the Holy Spirit.
There is nothing God cannot do, as long as it is in his will and purpose. He continues to take those who are nothing and making them something for the execution of his grand plan for humanity.
Still in this story we see humility at play in both women. Mary already knew the story about the child Elizabeth was carrying. She knew that the child was to be the forerunner of the Messaiah. Now that she knew she Mary was carrying the Messaiah, she would not have seen any reason to visit the elderly woman. A proud and arrogant girl would have ordered Elizabeth to come to her. Mary demonstrates humility.
On her part Elizabeth would have become jealous of Mary, but she rather exalted Mary as “my Lord’s mother.” She uttered words that has become a part of the rosary prayer of Mary for Catholics. “You are the most blessed of all women and blessed is the child you will bear!”
She also told Mary, “How happy you are to believe that the Lord’s message to you will come true!” Mary believed the angel’s message to her and said, “I am the Lord’s servant, may it happen to me as you have said”(Lk.1:38).
Elizabeth was not there when the angel visited Mary, and Mary did not tell her about the incident. But the Holy Spirit filled Elizabeth and made her know these things.
Bottom line dear friend, God can use even you as his instrument of grace in a broken and distorted world like ours. He speaks to us in silent accents through visions and dreams. If you hear from him be glad to believe that his message to you will come true.
Prayer of the day and week: Holy Spirit fill me so that I should keep on believing in the words of the LORD concerning his work of salvation. Amen!
Have a blessed day and week! Peace be with you! Merry Christmas!
