“Believe In The Word Of God And Stop Asking For Miraculous Signs!”
I don’t know whether we qualify to be called “a wicked generation” because of the quest for miraculous signs. I told a colleague the other day that “you casters and binders” are in high need in China.” Unfortunately miraculous prophets do not need to leave their countries since the Corona virus is spreading like wildfire with cases now reported in almost every country.
Is God testing our faith with the Corona virus? “Speaking of a plague brought by rats into the city of Oran before the second World War, Albert Camus insists that:
- Either one must join the doctor and fight the plague or join the priest and not fight the plague.
- But not to join the doctor and fight the plague would be antihumanitarian.
- But to fight the plague is to fight against God who sent it.
- Therefore, if humanitarianism is right, theism is wrong.”
In other words, “if humanitarianism is right, there can be no loving God. And if there is some kind of God, he must be worked against, since he is the cause of evil…”
This moral arguements against tbe existence of God or an exhibition of his impotency or lack of goodwill has been raised here and there to challenge theistic religions in the wake of the Corona virus.
However God has already outlined four ways by which he punishes evil: sword(war), famine, drought and perstilence. At times the punishments are conterminous. War can lead to famine and disease in the same way famine can lead to disease and war.
We are experiencing all these not because God is a bad God but because man is evil by nature.
If Corona virus was caused by eating bats etc, we cannot blame God for creating bats, but rather blame humanity for eating what wasn’t healthy for the human system.
It is even wrong to think that to join the fight against a virus is a fight against God. Health is wealth and we have been told that cleanliness is next to godlinness. Therefore keeping basic hygeine to stay safe is in the will of God.
There is no end time here because of Corona virus! That is wrong theology. African superstition would also be quick to ascribe it to witchcraft and like in Elechi Amadi’s “The Great Ponds” all the deaths could be atttributed to a curse because of the tussle between two villages, meanwhile all the deaths was “only the beginning” of “the Great Influenza of 1918” which “was to claim a grand total of some twenty million lives all over the world.”
That is why Jesus is telling us miracle workers to stop asking for a miraculous sign, otherwise the people of Nineveh will stand in judgment against us and condemn us. They listened to Jonah and repented(Lk.11:29-32). Let us also listen to God and repent of our sins so as to be free of the punishments either by the sword, famine, drought or pestilence!
Prayer: Father give us listening ears and hearts that are prone to positive actions so as to be spared of your wrath. Amen!
