“Be Just And Righteous!”
A journalist asked a great poet, “Which among your poems is your favourite?” The poet replied, “My favourite poem is the one I will write next.” This is (un)consciously true for most of us when we say “the best is yet to come.”
The prophets of Israel were also great poets who were convinced that the best was yet to come. When present expectations cannot be met only hope in a better future brings consolation. Unfortunately the joy which is often expressed at any new coronation often turns sour with the passage of time.
In his day, and by his name, King Zedekiah was the hope of his people because Zedekiah means, “The Lord is my righteousness.” But he did not meet the expectations of his name.
Jeremiah in one of his most important Messianic passages looked forward to the day when a new king will be enthroned having the name, “The Lord Our Righteousness.” This Messiah King (Ps.2) will live up to the expectations of his name. He would bestow on his people the abundant blessings that can only come from the hands of a King who does what is just and right in the land (Jer.23:5-6).
We have just commemorated the fulfilment of Jeremiah’s prophecy – the birth of Christ the Just and Righteous King! We can only benefit from this King’s abundance if we emulate his example by being just and righteous at our little corners and in whatever we do as social beings.
We are going to be saved from all our crises only when we inherit and use correctly the just and righteous legacy bequeathed to us by the Messiah!
Weekend prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, thank you for teaching us that wisdom comes from being just and righteous. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you! Once more, Merry Christmas!
