“Be Duty-Conscious Like The Sun, Moon And Stars!”
Each item of creation was purposeful. Day four saw the coming into existence of lights in the sky.
Their purposes were: #to seperate the day from the night, #to let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, #to give light to the earth, #to govern the day and night, #and to seperate light from darkness.
The sun and moon are “two great lights. The sun as the greater light governs the day while the moon, the lesser light governs the night. Stars were also made to give light on the earth. (Gen.1:14-19).
The purpose for the sun, moon and stars are important to avoid the confusion of regarding them as deities as was and is understood in pagan religions. Also, astrology as is practiced is not in the purpose for which the stars were created. Astrology is a deviation from God’s original purpose.
The role of sun, moon and stars to be assigned to govern day and night is another revelation of the nature of God. God the Great Creator-King assigns subordinate regulating roles to certain of his creatures. What a great lesson! Whoever is assigned a subordinate role has a job description. Once a job description is established there is need for a free hand to work by the rules. The sun, moon and stars carry out their functions without waiting for God to give them firm instructions neither does God follow them with a cane. They know what to do and they do it without grumbling and coercion. They are duty-conscious and do not for once go against God.
As the story unfolds, God gave man that same subordinate role to rule over all…creatures… What did man do? Or better still, what have we done? Instead of behaving like the sun, moon and stars we have become a thorn in God’s flesh!
We are only blessed in that we are serving a gracious and merciful God who is always having an outstretched arm to receive his prodigal children.
May we borrow from the sun, moon and stars to keep to timetables and unflinching obedience God’s word. May we also not use the constellations for purposes other than the ones for which they were brought into existence!
Prayer: Holy Spirit lead me to be duty-conscious and as obedient to the Father as the sun, moon and stars. Amen!
