“Be A Servant Leader!”
West African wisdom says you should first of all chase the fox that came to catch the chicks after which you warn the hen against wandering far into the bush. One of the characteristics of servanthood leadership is to learn to pretend not to hear some of the things your collaborators are talking about. And when you hear, don’t react in public. Either chastise, rebuke or correct in private.
Jesus was travelling with the disciples and overheard them arguing. He didn’t give the impression that he had heard. While they were in the house he asked them to know what they were arguing about. They were silent because according to Mark, “they had argued about who was the greatest” (Mk.9:33-37). According to Luke the argument arose “as to which of them would be the greatest”(Lk.9:46-48). “Would be” means they were probably thinking in terms of succession; whereas in Mark the argument was centred around their present statuses.
When Jesus asked them the question they kept quiet because they were embarrassed.
Questions concerning rank and status are normal and they played an important role in the life of Jewish groups. But these had no place in Jesus’ value system.
Jesus then gave them a concise lecture on leadership that has a place in his value system: “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.”
Rulers lord it over their people and their high officials excercise authority over the people, but it must not be so with the followers of Jesus (Mk.10:42-44). “Jesus overturns the value structure of the world. The life of discipleship is to be characterized by humble and loving service”
Servanthood leadership is to have open arms to receive even little children. We welcome Jesus when we welcome the nameless, faceless nobodies in the name of Jesus. And by extension we welcome the Father who sent him (Mk.9:33-37).
Jesus does not expect us to copy the oppressive and repressive leadership style of the world, but rather to lead in humble and loving service.
My friend, Jesus is telling you that if you are a Christian leading in the secular society or if you are leading at any level in any place that exist because of his name, you should render humble and caring service. Do not despise some people because of their lowly statuses! All humanity is equal before God!
Prayer: Holy Spirit instill in me the spirit of humble and loving leadership. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
