“Be Mindful You Don’t Twist God’s Word; Even Out Of Ignorance”
I remember when I embarked on my Bachelor’s degree programme in theology. From the first day as per his course outline our lecturer in New Testament theology expected us to choose a book, summarise it and make an informed conclusion from the book.
The book I worked on was to answer the question whether it was Jesus or Paul who was the founder of Christianity. I’m not going into the polemics of my conclusion, but I must confess it’s a tough decision to make concerning the question and the duo.
Here is Paul again talking about what has given rise to monastic and priestly celibacy and also nunnery!
Today there is a lot of talks about reparations and confessions of paedophiles by those who have chosen celibacy.
History informs us that Martin Luther the reformer invaded one of the nunneries and got married to one of the Rev Sisters.
One of the biblical justifications for a celibate ministry and women being maried to Jesus is from Paul’s personal opinion where concerning virgins he thinks it is good for them to remain as they are. There was no need for seeking any new marriage.
But here lies the falacy because Paul considered the time was short for marriage. Paul was convinced that the second coming of Christ was around the corner. This was in the same way the early believers sold their properties to “fools” who didn’t know Jesus Christ was soon returning. Ananias and Sapphira were just playing safe when they kept something back!
Paul’s advice here is that in any earthly activity a believer is indulging in, the one must know it is “short lived!” “For this world in its present form is passing away”(I Cor.7:25-31).
We cannot know fully the mind of God and such ignorance leads us into misleading theologies!
Prayer: May God alone through the Holy Spirit lead us into the truth of scriptures for our spiritual and human edification. Amen!
Have a blessed day! Peace be with you!
