“My Lord And My Spouse, Until Death Do Us Part!”
Marriage is a God ordained bond until death can there be any parting. Though the teaching of marriage as insoluble comes from Genesis, the text does not use the word marriage. Marriage being a life union, the word “divorce” was only a later concept when the population of the earth had increased leading to increased lust and an urge for variety. When this happened Moses was bound to pass a law on the possibility of issueing a certificate of divorce to a woman, so as to divorce her.
Jesus says Moses permitted divorce because of the hardness of men’s hearts and that divorce even as such could only be based on marital unfaithfulness.
Again we realise it is a man’s world! Unfaithfulness in marriage is perpetuated more by men than women. We just reminded you of the statement uttered after the Nairobi symposium on misleading theologies. Inclusive in the statement is the need “to further deconstruct misleading theologies relating to women and leadership…”
According to Moses it is the man to issue the woman a certificate of divorce caused by unfaithfulness(Mtt.19:1-12). This is a discriminatory patriarchal law against women. If unfaithfulness comes from the man – and we men are culprits of this – the woman has no opportunity or right to issue a certificate of divorce to the man. There is need here to empower the woman.
In Cameroon it is enough to charge the woman of adultery if the husband saw her chatting intimately with another man, whereas for a woman to charge the husband of adultery, she must have caught him in the act of penetration! This is male chauvinism at its worst!
Women should be given a level ground!
Fidelity in a marriage leads to holiness. Any believer who has entered into union with God in Christ and starts running after witchdoctors, going to consult pigmies, going to marabouts for extra powers is guilty of divorce in the union he entered with God! The Bible reminds us constantly, “Remember your old love, the woman of your youth…!”
Learn to be faithful to the spouse you accepted for better or for worse until death separates. Above all, remember God your first love and stop fretting with other gods!
Sunday prayer: Lord help me to remain in steadfast union with my spouse and to remain faithful to the covenant I made with you, Amen!
Have a blessed Sunday! Peace be with you!
